Game Engines: the Search and Scope

So in my quest to make a proof of content for a role-playing game, I have to find a game engine to run everything on.

But the biggest issue is that many game engines for making a 2D sprite-like style from an overhead perspective, much like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, don't run on Macs but PCs. Since I don't have a PC, this severely limits my options.

However I did find two engines that are able to be downloaded: Open RPG Maker and GameMaker. While Open RPG Maker opened right up, I do not know how to begin or navigate the engine just yet, more testing being needed.

GameMaker on the other hand has a 10 minute demo, and has a full version for $20.00 for the Mac as well. Once I try the demo I will most likely buy the full version, as another engine on hand is better than nothing.

Maybe I can find some tutorials online to get a better understanding of the engines, but I have high hopes for them so far.
