After some recent work on the project, I realize I may be farther than I thought in it. Originally I wanted to have a moving character controlled by the player, different rooms, a pause function, text boxes, and a mock-battle to show off the combat.
I have all of that finished except for the combat, a bit some work on the text boxes is still being figured out. I am trying to have them appear for more than a split second, but I do know how to make them as I wish.
Overall, I'm about 80% finished with what I wanted my final proof of concept to be. I think that's pretty good considering. Though it might be 90% depending on how the mock-battle turns out and its more complicated than I realize.

GameMaker Update
I've been gathering different concept arts and pictures of my clay models for the backgrounds of the different rooms, as well as making a functioning pause button. I'm still looking into making the position of the player character stay the same when the game is un-paused, but I remain optimistic.
Assuming this is solved quickly, I plan to add a text box between characters and a transition as well as to a quick prototype turn-based "boss fight". One thing at a time though; pause screen first.
